Is LunarPages really running unsecure, outdated servers?

November 16, 2011 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

I am doing a lot of work with local clients lately providing SEO Services, Internet Consulting, and other related services. One recent project included to move a static website to WordPress. The client was hosting her website with Lunarpages and so I did not anticipate problems in regards to the environment. Lunarpages has a decent reputation.  The first warning came when I noticed that cpanel was not outdated, but was configured running a fairly old skin/theme and many functions were locked down or not available. How Much Does It Cost To Host A Website?

January 5, 2011 By Christoph Puetz 1 Comment

How much does it cost you to host a website on the Internet? This is one of the most common questions one might ask when talking about getting a website. It is 2011 and by now you would think that most people actually do know the answer to this question. As you can guess, not everyone knows how cheap web hosting can be. Host Gator Customer Review And What Else

August 7, 2010 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

This is an actual Host Gator customer who decided to review his web hosting provider in public. He did so on one of the well known web hosting forums on the Internet. If you are interested in web hosting with Hostgator this is definitely worth checking out. And if you do not know Host Gator webhosting, Hostgator is one of the largest web hosts currently around. The company grew from a college dorm room into a company with own data centers in different locations and hundreds of employees.

Here is a summary of the web hosting review (and of course a link to the source): [Read more…] about Host Gator Customer Review And What Else

Web Host Research – How to choose the right Web Host

April 11, 2010 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

You need a new web host. You do a Google Search for “Web Hosting”  and you feel a little overwhelmed by the 252,000,000 results Google presents in return. Admittedly, choosing the right host can be a overwhelming endeavor – no doubt. Now what? You pick a couple of web hosts and look at their websites, investigate pricing and hosting features. Now more confusion – all these web hosts pretty much look alike. Same pricing (though sometimes prices are $0.50 higher or lower), same features, same bandwidth and disk space and even the website design looks somewhat familiar going from host to host. It almost makes the impression they are running their web hosting business of the same blue print or the same manual.

Now, where do you turn to find a new web host? While you can use one of the many web hosting comparison websites (including my own list of web hosting recommendations), the best way is usually to follow the recommendation of a friend or family member. Personal recommendations are the best way to pick a new web host.

But when these personal recommendations are missing, how can you choose the right web host? Use common sense, spend some time researching and then create a list of 3 possible web hosts you like to try out. Verify that each webhost offers a money back guarantee and then move forward. Using a web host that offers a money back guarantee is important as it allows you to leave quickly without occurring any cost. Important in my opinion is the choice where you register your domain name. I personally do not want to be tied to a certain web host by registering the domain name I use through the web host. I prefer 3rd party domain name registries like NameCheap as an example. I keep control over the domain name. If I would try a new web host and have my domain name registered through the web host, they might either keep the name or charge a higher than normal price or make it really difficult to leave. What good is a money back guarantee if you have to leave your domain name behind?!

So, register the domain name at NameCheap (or if really necessary at Godaddy (be warned of the many upsells Godaddy has)), then work your way through the list of 3 web hosts that you like to try. Keep a good backup of your website so that you can easily move to a new web hosting provider as needed. Some web hosts offer better pricing if you pre-pay for 12 months or more. While this is a good deal, you might want to go month to month first and once you like a web host, contact their billing department and switch your payment option and pre-pay. Or at least pick the lowest pre-payment option and then upgrade later on. Do not let the lowest price force you into a decision you do not feel comfortable with. Every webhost will want you to stay and so it is never a problem to change your hosting plan option later on.

Here are my 3 favorite web hosts at the moment. Feel free to make them your list of web hosts to try out.

IPower Web Hosting Services

April 10, 2010 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

Web Hosting Services provided by IPower hosting are in demand for many years. IPower Web Hosting is one of the few web hosting providers that actually offers their own web hosting control panel (vDeck) and does not use cPanel or Plesk. This is probably one reason why I have not really looked at this web hosting service provider as the majority of my web hosting is using cPanel. But then you never know what something is good for. IPower web hosting has carved out their own niche in the web hosting industry and apparently with good success. So, they must be doing something right and from what I can tell that is happening in regards to quality of service combined with cheap web hosting prices. They are also not after those customers that want it all for nothing. For IPower Web Hosting it is paying of to not enter the race of who can offer the lowest price (that’s usually where quality goes down as well). For me this is a huge benefit as it shows that IPower Web Hosting is out there to provide you with the best web hosting service possible.

Who is IPower Web Hosting at all? IPower is headquartered in Arizona. This web hosting company was founded in 2001, grown to way over 700,000 customers today it is certainly not a small business. Monthly surveys are done to make sure the customer is happy with the service as well as to find problems before they become issues and to address them. Their main goal is to make the customer happy and to allow them to make the best out of their web hosting.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a rock solid web host with lots of business experience and very affordable web hosting prices, then IPower Hosting is definitely worth a look. See the entire list of features and current pricing here.

Host Monster Web Hosting

March 29, 2010 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

Host Monster is often considered a low profile webhost that has gradually (but surely) grown to become one of the greatest market players within the shared hosting universe. In my personal opinion Hostmonster website hosting is one of the greatest cpanel web hosting companies currently available. I personally favor cpanel for all my own website hosting due to the stable web hosting setup it provides and as it allows me to take care of all my web hosting customizations myself. Host Monster uses cPanel since they started offering web hosting and they are one of the largest cPanel hosts in my opinion. Why am I saying this? Well, Host Monster is home to over 750,000 domains that are hosted on their web servers. Not many web hosting providers can boost such a statistic.

Host Monster started as a web host in 1996 and has now completed 14 years in business. How many web hosts you know of can offer the same stability and experience? I know a few, but I can count them on 2 hands and have plenty of room counting. I started my own web hosting career with a website that I was able to host on my ISP’s servers, but I soon realized that my own domain name would be a good thing to have and to pick a good web host. By that time domain names still cost $35/year to register. At that time Host Monster was already around offering cheap web hosting. It’s amazing in my opinion.

Host Monster is different in one way as they still offer SSH access for their shared web hosting accounts. Call me old school, but I like that additional level of control as a web hosting customer. Not that this matters to most web hosting customers, but if you ever get to the next level in web hosting where you rather want to do something via SSH it is good to know that there are still web hosts out there that offer this kind of feature.

In regards to features, disk space, and bandwidth allowance you do not have to compromise with Host Monster. They match what other web hosts offer and even go the extra mile by offering you a free domain name registration INCLUDING domain privacy. Domain Privacy hides your personal information on the domain name registration (WHOIS) so that spammers cannot look up your phone number or your administrative email address. Depending where you would buy this on the open market you usually pay somewhere between $10 – $15 for this addon. Host Monster gives it to your for no extra cost. Free Domain Name Registration and Privacy Protection – this combination is hard to beat and hard to find from all other web hosts.

My Conclusion for today is that Host Monster is a great web host and you should definitely take a look at it before signing up for any other web host. Just because they do not advertise as aggressively as others, they should not be ignored. Their support has a great reputation and so if you love high uptime for your website (who doesn’t!!!), Host Monster might just do the trick. Liquidweb Customer Review

March 12, 2010 By Christoph Puetz Leave a Comment

I was browsing a web hosting forum the other answering questions and providing free web hosting advice when I noticed a thread about Liquidweb. Liquidweb.com is one of my favorite hosts when it comes to fully managed dedicated servers. This was a Liquidweb customer who had nothing but praise for his web host.

I finally took the plunge this last August and got my first dedicated server, thanks in part to the good reviews here at WHT. I went with LiquidWeb and I do not regret it for a second. The server was up immediately, and they have ever so patiently helped me with all the questions I had as someone who is new to using a dedicated server.

The customer makes some really good points here. For one he trusted the web hosting reviews and picked a high quality web host. His server was setup immediately and the heroic support of Liquidweb jumped right in to provide a top notch experience.

There has been next to no downtime, Apache failed once and support took a look and had it back in up seconds (before I even got the email saying that it was down), they’re always super fast on support – either by email or by phone – and very polite and knowledgeable.

This is very important to notice. Liquidweb’s support team caught a problem before the customer did and instead of just waiting it out, they went ahead and fixed the problem. Job well done, Liquidweb.

Usually when I contact support, it’s because I’ve done something silly or I have no idea how to do something – the server and connectivity has been fantastic. It is incredible to call or email support, any time, day or night, and get a response back almost immediately. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Liquid Web! This is a company that gets it right.

The reviewer explains why he contacts support and how that experience has been. I have written about the same thing several times. Liquidweb has highly skilled support engineers that also have good people skills and know how to treat a customer right.

About Liquidweb in case you do not know them. Liquid Web offers cheap shared hosting, but is mainly known for their web hosting offers on fully managed dedicated servers at very low prices. They own their data centers and provide a superb environment. Their business puts the customer first and you can really tell it is paying off.

Go here to check out Liquidweb yourself.

Go here to check out their current Specials.

If you sign up with Liquidweb, let me know by using either a comment on this posting or by using the contact us form of my website. I’d love to publish your review with a link back to your website. Thank you.
