Web Hosting Resource Kit – Editor’s Opinion 1/2004

Time is flying fast. It is already July 5th of 2004. “The Web Hosting Report” project got started in January this year and look how we have come. Did you know that we are already listed on 11 search engines and do have a Google Page Rank above average?! Our website already contains more than 31,000 words of text. And we’re leaning back.

Some time in August our book will hit the market. Yes, you heard it right. We wrote a book about web hosting and it is being published soon. From the feedback we have received it is clear that many users rather have a book in their hands with information instead of reading the same information on the screen. We’ve listened and the result will be available soon. The book is already completed and has been released for the catalog listing (which takes about 6 weeks). Please make sure you come back in August to find out more.

What else is going on in the industry? Things seemed to have slowed down a little bit (at least that is our impression). The market for dedicated servers is not moving very much. At the lower several new (kind of new) providers are trying to grab their share – with mixed results. Prices are low but quality seems to be low, too. If you are in the market, please be careful who you go with. If your business depends on uptime do not select one of the low-end providers. Some of the companies currently ‘working’ the market seemed to be overwhelmed with their sales volume and support is lacking at the same side. Sometimes slower growth is the better option. We have also seen arrogant behavior of some of the providers and that combined with the slow or non-existing support is scary. Scary is that they seem to be successful luring people to their business. Buyer beware. The bigger guys seem to be holding back right now – no major price changes or market moves. Maybe they are just waiting for the fall-out from the other guys.

Two large reseller hosts were good for some news. Voxtreme apparently acquired HTTPME.com and all their clients. As with every merger or acquisition – things seem to be stirred up a little bit. There is nothing major going on, but it will be interesting to see how things work out over the next six months. However – this acquisition is a major step for Matt of Voxtreme – considering the guy is just about 20 years old (according to a statement he made in a web hosting forum). Some of the older guys in the industry should rather wake up and see what the younger generation is capable of doing.

Thanks for visiting the “Web Hosting Resource Kit”. We will make this column a steady part of our website with frequent updates. Make sure you join us for the next issue.

Best regards,
