How not to do customer service (real life web hosting example)

Many moons ago I signed up to become an affiliate with JustHost.com to earn money from referring customers to them. They gave me a test account because when I write reviews I at least want to have seen and tested their environment. I think if you are honest when reviewing products and services the reader will feel it and it makes you more trustworthy.

This week I started getting emails from JustHost with an invoice. However, they have things mixed up badly and so I emailed them back saying to check on things. Apparently the accounting or billing department at Just Host is not up to speed when it comes to providing good customer service. They emailed me back, completely ignoring the message I had sent them.

Hi Luke,

I’m really sorry to hear that you wish to cancel your hosting with us.

Before you cancel your account, I would love to try to resolve any issues you may have and offer you 3 months FREE hosting as a goodwill gesture if I can resolve your issues and get you to stay.

If you need help with anything and would like me to arrange 3 months free hosting credits for you to stay a happy JustHost customer just let me know, alternatively to go ahead and cancel your account please use the information below.

For one I am not Luke and I never used the name Luke and second I did not ask to cancel “my” account. So, either this is an automated message or the person who wrote it is just ignorant and follows a certain step by step process without actually putting some effort in to really read and understand incoming communications.

At the moment I am not a JustHost.com customer and after this experience I will probably think twice before signing up with them. As a result of this I have downgraded my rating for JustHost and moved them to the #9 spot on my Top 10 List of Good Web Hosting Companies.

PS: I have added a discussion to the web hosting business training forum in case you would like to join in.
