Happy Thanksgiving. Yes, I know – I am two days late, but it is still Thanksgiving Weekend and so I think this still counts. I hope you had a good holiday weekend so far. Did you know that Thanksgiving is a time to switch to a new web host?! Many web hosting providers have some awesome deals available and if you are in the market for a new web host or want to save some money compared to your existing web hosting, then now is the time. These cheap web hosting deals will not last forever as you can imagine. [Read more…]
Just a few days ago I talked to a friend about my different online ventures. He was amazed by the number of domain names I own (roughly 145 at this point). He asked me if I would have a website for each domain name I own. I actually declined and mentioned that I have roughly 60% of my domain names developed with their own website. Thinking about his overall reaction I think it is important to point out how easy it is to bring up your own website. [Read more…]
This is an actual Host Gator customer who decided to review his web hosting provider in public. He did so on one of the well known web hosting forums on the Internet. If you are interested in web hosting with Hostgator this is definitely worth checking out. And if you do not know Host Gator webhosting, Hostgator is one of the largest web hosts currently around. The company grew from a college dorm room into a company with own data centers in different locations and hundreds of employees.
Here is a summary of the web hosting review (and of course a link to the source): [Read more…]
The answer for this question is easy: The answer is: “Yes” and “No”. Now that you are confused, let me explain this in a little more detail.
IX Hosting claims that with their offer of “FREE” unlimited domains this actually means the ability for you to host unlimited domains without any extra charges or fees on your IX Web Hosting account. This offer does not include the actual domain registration fee which is around $10 depending on where you register it these. Many people seem to get confused when they hear about unlimited domain web hosting and I agree – the verbage is often misleading. [Read more…]
With the growing popularity of streaming media (video, podcasts, etc.) on the Internet, there are many good reasons reasons why you to pick a web hosting provider that supports these new types of content. Visits to sites like Youtube and other streaming media sites has exploded over the years and Internet users are hungry for new content all the time. Some web hosts have not caught on to these trends and their web hosting packages and services are outdated. Therefore, if you are currently incorporating these rich media files into your web site, you may be limited by what your web host has to offer.
Your task: Find a web host that supports streaming media technology with its services
Although, some traditional web hosting services do support audio and video files via “progressive download” technology, this technology has a number of limitations. The biggest issue is that large file sizes for audio and video files translate into extremely long download times for the visitor. And as you know, Internet users will leave a website fast if the website or files load really slow. So, it is important that your web host supports streaming media. With streaming media applications, your audio and video files will start playing right away. There is no need to wait for a download to finish first.
Over the last 2 years some web hosts have paid attention to user needs and are offering unlimited web hosting. While “unlimited” is a little bit misleading, the main idea is that a moderate user will not have to worry about his website being limited by resources like disk or bandwidth. This is ideal if you want to host podcasts and videos on your website and stream them out to website visitors.
I can recommend the following 3 web hosts as they are a good choice for web hosting needs described above. They offer cheap web hosting, almost unlimited resource (keep in mind what I said earlier about “unlimited”), and these web hosts are reliable and well established. The list is in no particular order – no matter which cheap web host you pick, you should be just fine.
The old saying that goes like this “You get what you pay” in regards to quality of a products is partially true when it comes to web hosting. However, one main difference is the nature of how web hosting works at the lower end of the scale. Shared web hosting over the years has really reached the bottom end of where prices can go. Large web hosting providers have driven down prices dramatically, but do require a pre-payment of 12 months or more in return. New web hosting providers trying to compete with these companies have to go through a cut throat process to gain customers. The main difference I see here is that these newer web hosts do not require a pre-payment of 12 months or more – they offer lower prices on a month by month basis.
That’s where things get out of whack and that’s where cheap web hosting can put your website at risk. While the larger web hosts have enough cash flow to work things out, smaller web hosting providers do not. When things do not work out as they hope, they have to eventually shutdown business and take everything down with them. That is the situation you want to avoid. Cheap web hosting is a good deal if you do your homework upfront. You can save a lot of money by going with a cheap web host, but you have to pick a web host that is established and has a proven track record.
If you are able and willing to pre-pay going with a provider like JustHost or IX Web Hosting you easily cut your web hosting cost in half. You can bring your web hosting fees down to less than $4.00 per month without losing out on features, bandwidth, disk space, or support. However, you need to determine if your website is a good fit for one of those web hosts. Most personal or small business websites fit that category well. Websites of power users or larger business websites do not fit well.
The following list shows my current favorites for cheap web hosting (in no particular order).
Sometimes web hosting is not that easy. You want to add a SSL Certificate to your website and immediately you are in need of a static IP address for your website. Some web hosts hand those out for free, while others charge a premium price for it.
I am personally in the market for some high end web hosting right now for a website that needs an SSL certificate and decided to shop around before settling for either one of my existing web hosts or getting a new one. It’s amazing to see how differently web hosts handle this topic. The only thing persistent is that every host I talked will require justification for why a static IP address is needed.
In regards to pricing the range goes from free to outrageous expensive. One web host honestly wanted $5.50 per static IP address PER MONTH (rochenhost.com) !!!!!!! I was literally shocked when I received the quote and was not able to negotiate a better price. Even though the web host is more upscale and high end in its offerings, but still – the price for a static IP address is a rip-off in my opinion.
So, once the expensive host was sorted out, it was more a question of which web host and which control panel would I choose or better will I choose. I have not fully decided yet, but that is not the main purpose for this article. As a web hosting customer you have a choice when it comes to whom you go with for hosting your website. Little things, can turn out to be a major price factor if you do not pay attention. Paying for a static IP address is fine, but why pay $5.50 if you can either get your static IP address for free (IX Web Hosting) or for $6.00 per Year (httpme.com). The second option is a little more upscale and geared towards power users or small web hosting companies that use reseller accounts to spread out their hosting. There are many other options to choose from and I found prices for a static IP address ranging from $1.00 to $2.50.
Conclusion: Don’t settle for the first offer nor let a web host tell you stories. Do some research and do leave the door open to eventually switch to another web host. Moving a website between web hosts is not that difficult and you will be surprised how good other web hosts can be.
Will there be any major changes in Web Hosting in 2009? 2009 will be a difficult year for many web hosts. The economic hard times will not spare the web hosting industry and consolidation will be a result out of that. Smaller web hosts might be able to survive by trimming costs or by occupying certain niches that are too time consuming for the bigger hosts to pursue. Other web hosts will be forced to sell assets or to shutdown if they are not able to adapt to the new environment out there. Larger web hosts with enough cash flow will be able to grab those web hosting companies that are up for sale and increase their own market share accordingly. Interesting times ahead for sure.
From a consumer standpoint two things might happen. 1) Nothing happens if you are with a bigger web host. Things will be normal and your domain is just cruising along with the wind. 2) Your website is hosted with a smaller web host and the scenarios above might apply. The first thing you should do is to increase your backups to an offsite location (local hard drive or remove FTP site with a different web host). You should also keep an eye on things happening at your web host. If they have a newsletter it might be worth reading it in more detail to discover problems early and to act accordingly. If you are afraid of your web host losing the battle against the economy it might be worth moving your website early to a safe haven. How do you know if you are with a large or a small web host? Well, check their website or ask them. How many domains does your web host hosts? Do they own their own data center? Are they a reseller? The answers might tell you what to do. But keep in mind – not every small web host is at risk of shutting down. So, it is not the time to panic, but to be cautious and to be prepared.
Web Hosting will not go away and the products will grow to be stronger than ever.
Recommended Web Hosts that will most-likely survive this downturn:
A while ago we added IX Web Hosting to our list of web hosting recommendations and we have not looked back since. IX Web Hosting is a great alternative if you are looking for better web hosting compared to your current web hosting provider. You might ask if they are a good company and the answer I can give you is: Yes, they are. I am in frequent touch with one of their sales guys and the flow of communication is great and really makes me believe that you cannot go wrong with IX Webhosting as your choice as a web host.
Let’s look at their web hosting facilities. They own their data center in Columbus, Ohio and are currently hosting over 350,000 domains for their customers. They offer a large variety of information on their website and they have the tools in place that can help you to grow your website to the next level. Not every web host has an interest in helping you that much. They take your monthly payment and that is it. IX Web Hosting makes a different impression to me based on many things. Look at the extensive support options that make it easy to get in touch with them when you need it. They respond fast and their staff is knowledgeable.
You might have not heard of IX Webhosting before, but I am sure that once you are a customer over there you will be recommending their services to friends and family. Read our review summary here and check out their website here.
IX Web Hosting Review
A well established web host? Try IX Web Hosting. IX Web Hosting is an award-winning discount web hosting company that worked hard to become an industry leader. IX Hosting provides individuals and small to medium size businesses with all necessary tools required to easily establish an online presence with a domain name and a matching website. According to IX Web Hosting an estimated 5,000+ new clients make the switch to IX Web Hosting every month – that is over 60,000 new clients per year. Not many web hosts can boost such numbers.
IX Web Hosting supports Linux and Windows Web Hosting so that users can pick that flavor they need to bring their website online. For someone like me that is a huge benefit as I host websites on MS Windows and on Linux. I really prefer this one-stop web hosting option and if I would be in the market for web hosting, IX Web Hosting would be high on my list of possible web hosting providers because of this. Even better – All IX Hosting web hosting plans include applications that provide detailed website statistics including raw log files, free search engine submission services, professional web design software, an online file manager and much more. The list is very long to read and you might want to check out their website as the list of features and options keeps on growing.
IX Web Hosting offers unlimited disk space and dat transfer (bandwidth (some restrictions apply)) and a ton of great add-on features like e-mail accounts and add-on domains to host. Pricing is extremely competitive in my opinion and I think that you would have a hard time finding a web host that offers these kind of features AND support for that price AND actually delivers what you pay for. Many web hosts offer cheap web hosting and tons of features, but lack the “beef” behind those offers. IX Web Hosting seems to be different and that is well appreciated. They also feature a true 24/7 customer support center with toll-free phone support and live web chat support.
If you are an experienced webmaster you might want to know that all IX Hosting plans come with features like CGI-BIN, Perl 5, CGI-scripts, PHP 4, Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia DreamWeaver, Flash, and ShockWave, Real Media, MP3s, Quicktime, streaming audio, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Webalizer and ModLogan statistics, WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). Please note that ColdFusion, Microsoft SQL servers and Active Server Pages are available only with their Windows web hosting packages.
This web hosting review of IX Web Hosting is a first of a series of more detailed reviews that will appear soon on the Web Hosting Resource Kit website. From our experience you can choose a web host or you can choose the IX Web Hosting Difference. The latter is one of the best choices available on the Internet today when it comes to web hosting. If you just need a web host and bypass IX – well, good luck – you might need it. IX Web Hosting Website
