Updated Review of ThePlanet.com
Last summer I switched back from Softlayer to ThePlanet.com. My issue was too much data center related downtime and cheesy excuses by Softlayer. I had given them plenty of time and chances to work issues out or to offer me better pricing, but they did not wanted to go the extra mile. At that time ThePlanet.com had a sweet deal to under-cut competitors pricing by 10% + one month free hosting. I took advantage of that offer after working with their sales department for a couple days. Here is my experience so far.
Network uptime has been excellent so far. I think I had one minor issue that caused my server to be not reachable from the Internet. Support so far was pretty responsive, but I did not really had a need for support so far (knock on wood). About 6 weeks ago I upgraded the server from 2 GB Ram to 4 GB. Scheduling was easy and pricing was fair. Installation of the additional RAM was scheduled and executed on time. It took a little longer to get the RAM installed and downtime was about 45 minutes. No big issue as it was late Friday evening with very low traffic. Other than that is not really much I can report. I am very happy with ThePlanet.com and my life has become much less stressful compared to when being with Softlayer.

As you can see – pretty uneventful. That’s web hosting the way I like it. So, for me it was a good move to leave Softlayer and to give ThePlanet another try. Initially I was a Planet customer anyway – just did not get the price low enough when I had to upgrade to a more powerful server. From 2004 to 2006 I had a server with their ServerMatrix division at that time. So, no real reason for me to complain. I can recommend ThePlanet.com.
